Grappling is a very general term used to describe a very technical martial art. Grappling, also called submission grappling, submission fighting, or submission wrestling, encompasses the various ground fighting aspects of Mixed Martial Arts.

Ephrata Martial Arts offers grappling training in both gi and no-gi grappling. Here, grapplers develop a broad range of skills in several complementary areas, combining the powerful throws of Judo with the stealthy takedowns of Greco-Roman and Freestyle Wrestling, the slick joint locks of Russian SAMBO, and the snake-like submissions and escape tactics of Jujitsu. However, the grappling skills you'll learn at Ephrata Martial Arts can also be used as a means of self defense—to subdue an attacker without hurting them—one of the reasons why police officers, both local and from surrounding counties come to train at Ephrata Martial Arts.

Shuai Jiao, or Mongolian Wrestling is another important facet of the grappling program at Ephrata Martial Arts. Developed in China during the Zhou Dynasty as a military fighting system, Shuai Jiao is generally considered to be the oldest existing Chinese martial art and is among the oldest systematic martial arts in the world and continues to be taught in the police and military academies throughout China and Taiwan. Shuai Jiao, with its unique throws and joint locks, is the perfect complement to the other grappling and fighting disciplines taught at Ephrata Martial Arts.

Jujitsu, a Japanese martial art whose name means "gentle/yielding/compliant art". The battlefield-based fighting system evolved in Japan, originally employing striking techniques using the knuckles, fists, elbows, and knees. Today, many of its concepts and methods have been incorporated into other martial arts such as judo, karate, and aikido. Jujitsu, more specifically Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or BJJ has become synonymous with ground fighting, made widely popular by the Gracie family and the recent explosive popularity of mixed martial arts.

Jujitsu is an integral part of the grappling program offered by Ephrata Martial Arts, with its essential applications in gi and no-gi competition-style grappling, and mixed martial arts, or MMA fighting. Jujitsu reinforces and promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person can use leverage and proper technique to successfully defend themselves against a larger, stronger opponent.

Grappling training at Ephrata Martial Arts involves the live, realistic drilling of techniques, followed by the application of those techniques in sparring, or rolling. Students may also choose to join the ranks of the hundreds of thousands of competitors worldwide who have helped to make the sport the most widely practiced of all the Mixed Martial Arts—by competing alongside fellow Ephrata Martial Arts Fight Team members at nationally ranked events such as NAGA (North American Grappling Association) and Grappler’s Quest competitions.

Grapplers from NAGA and Grappler’s Quest have gone on to become accomplished veterans in the UFC and Pride fighting organizations—fighters like Forrest Griffin, Jeremy Horn, Tim Silvia, Jason “Mayhem” Miller, and Jeff Monson, to name a few.

Members of the Ephrata Martial Arts Fight Team have enjoyed much success at NAGA and Grappler’s Quest, with four competitors finishing the 2006 season ranking among the top in the nation in their respective divisions. Grappling can also be used as a means to subdue an attacker without hurting them—one of the reasons why police officers, both local and from surrounding counties come to train at Ephrata Martial Arts.

Shuai Jiao, or Mongolian Wrestling is the base of our grappling program. Developed in China during the Zhou Dynasty as a military fighting system, Shuai Jiao emphasizes throws and joint locks.

Jiu Jitsu—a Japanese art thought to be popular among the samurai—complements the program by adding sweeps, powerful strikes and varying degrees of ground fighting.
